TKM54 On the List Germany 2 1200x750 - Northeast Germany

Northeast Germany

A sense of adventure fills the air as I prepare for a road trip with Mathilde, my friend from Norway. Armed with a campervan, kite gear and SUPs, we set off on a journey from Stavanger, Norway to the picturesque countryside of northeast Germany. As the wheels roll beneath us, we leave behind the stunning landscapes of Norway, eager to explore new horizons. The open road stretches ahead and we pass mile after mile on the autobahn, excited to reach our destination.

TKM54 On the List Germany 7 - Northeast Germany

Arriving in northeast Germany, we find ourselves in a region known for its serene countryside and charming small cities like Rostock, the perfect spot for SUP and kite enthusiasts like us. We unpack the SUPs and head to a nearby lagoon, where tranquility reigns supreme. The lagoon is so flat and perfect to paddle in, and as we glide along the calm waters, boats pass by with people waving to us and smiling. Even the cows grazing in the fields pause to watch us float by. The combination of nature’s beauty and the peacefulness of the surroundings creates an idyllic setting, allowing me to unwind and embrace the present moment. After hours on the lagoon we get back in the van. The freedom of a campervan makes finding a place to camp a breeze. We choose spots that offer solitude and a view, where the only sounds are the rustling of leaves. As the sun begins its descent towards the horizon, painting the sky with vibrant hues, we lie in bed just relaxing and looking out at the magical spectacle of a breathtaking sunset. The view might not be quite as perfect as the north of Norway, but it’s better than I thought it would be!

The forecast is showing wind for the next few days, as well as the promise of sun, so the next morning we set off towards a kite spot, eager to feel the exhilaration of the wind in our sails. We find the spot easily and the wind has showed up. I jump on my 12m for a session while Mathilde snaps some photos. The water is warm (well for us Norwegians anyway!) and afterwards there is a nice sea view to enjoy from the camper while drinking a coffee. Camping overnight is not permitted at this spot, so we head elsewhere for the night. Mathilde is the map reader and she leads us to another good spot she knows for kiting. We find a quiet place to camp on a magnificent beach, and as day turns into night the wind blows through the trees and I plan an early-morning session.

The next day, the wind is still blowing and the empty beach is ready for my kite and me. Crystal clear water, sailboats moored up, and the sun starting to shine – this is paradise for kiters. After a good session it is time for food and coffee in the camper – ah the simple life! Of course when you are living in a van, it’s good to take a shower at some point, so we use Google and find a spa to relax in with a sauna, swimming pool and a shower. Feeling like new, I’m ready for more camping and kite sessions. Over the course of the trip we check out kite spots at Prerow, Ahrenshoop, Dierhagen, Warnemunde, Kägsdorf and Insel Poel. Having enjoyed sessions at the many spots along this stretch of coast, with a heart full of gratitude, I return home, with memories of warm encounters with friendly locals, kite and SUP adventures on serene lagoons and ocean, and peaceful moments of solitude in a calm, relaxing part of the world

Getting There

This part of Germany is easily reachable by road so you can drive there, or if you fly in (to Hamburg for example) having a vehicle is recommended so you can visit different spots.

Staying There

There is a range of accommodation in Rostock and along the coast, but in the summer a campervan is a great option.

Rubber

A shortie or 3/2 in the summer.

In the Bag

I used mainly larger sizes, but smaller kites would be needed in autmnn and winter, or if a summer storm comes through.

Beer

There are plenty of drinking establishments along the coast, or stock up at the supermarket.

Most Likely to Hear

German…

Least Likely to Hear

Why is it so hard to find a beer?!
