THEKITEMAG ISSUE #58

Tarifa

Spain

Tarifa is one of the world’s most popular kite spots, and while there is plenty of info already out there about it, we thought it wouldn’t hurt to do an up-to-date round up as it’s an ever-evolving kiting hub. Keanu Merten, two-times Spanish champion and team rider for Duotone, hails from Benahavis, Estepona, 70km from Tarifa, but spends several months in Tarifa every year and knows it as well as anyone…

THEKITEMAG ISSUE #54

Northeast Germany

A sense of adventure fills the air as I prepare for a road trip with Mathilde, my friend from Norway. Armed with a campervan, kite gear and SUPs, we set off on a journey from Stavanger, Norway to the picturesque countryside of northeast Germany. As the wheels roll beneath us, we leave behind the stunning landscapes of Norway, eager to explore new horizons. The open road stretches ahead and we pass mile after mile on the autobahn, excited to reach our destination.

North West Australia

Australia

With a massive area of 2.6 million km2 (ten times larger than the UK) and some of Australia’s most archetypal landscapes, Western Australia (aka WA) is the home of the iconic road trip. Remote and vast get completely new meanings here in Australia’s largest state. Some 1,200km north of the capital Perth – the most isolated city in the world – the World-Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef is a sparkling gem in WA’s crown. With a length of 260km and home to around 300 species of coral and 500 species of fish, it is one the largest fringing coral reefs in the world. Interestingly it is also only one of two coral reefs in the world that have formed on the western edge of any continent.

The Outer Banks

Outer Banks, USA

The Outer Banks are a series of islands off the coast of North Carolina. They stretch for roughly 200 miles and form a giant, bent elbow, with a huge bay on the inside and the Atlantic Ocean on the other side. In many areas the islands are very narrow and you can walk from the bay to the ocean in 30 minutes or less.

The Bahamas consist of three huge geological banks just beneath the water. In the Atlantic Ocean, these banks create a shallow paradise with the most emerald colored water you could ever imagine.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Jurre Witte and Suzanne Legtenberg are currently sailing round the world, hitting up beautiful kite spots as they go. Jurre took some time out to tell us about one. Luckily for the rest of us a sailing boat isn’t essential to get there – you can fly in instead, although the runways are a lot smaller than you might be used to…

El Gouna

Egypt

Egypt has a lot of very nice flatwater spots with turquoise crystal-clear water. While I have traveled to many different kite spots in Egypt, most of them are at all-inclusive hotels with nothing but desert surrounding them. Which is totally fine if you just want to kite, eat, sleep, repeat, but I was missing a more normal life – the opportunity to go out to a restaurant at night or even just move outside of your accommodation. When I first arrived in El Gouna, which a kite teacher once described to me as ‘Egyptian Disneyland’ I realized it is a one-of-a-kind spot for kiting and enjoying life.
