THE LOWDOWN
This Caribbean warm-water paradise was recently discovered by the GKA as a new spot for freestyle competition. Fast developing but still not a crowded spot, with a variety of water conditions and constant wind, Salinas del Rey is perhaps the best place for kiting in Colombia, be it wave riding, Big Air or freestyle, as well as wingfoiling. Get to know the friendly, colorful local culture and maybe even participate in the world’s second largest carnival in Barranquilla. Kitesurf Experience is one of the first kite and wing schools in the area with IKO certificated instructors who speak multiple different languages providing beginner to advanced lessons with radio systems. We offer exciting downwinders, rental gear from North, a repair service, and a transfer service. We offer several accommodation options from bungalows to co-living with like-minded people. Salinas has a lot of heart to offer to our new friends!
Kiting Set Up
Kitesurf Experience is on the main kite beach. We provide transfers from your hotel to the spot and access to all the facilities such as bathrooms, changing rooms and fresh water showers in the beach club nearby. There is a sandy coastline with no rocks and plenty of space to launch and land kites. We have beach staff who are happy to help with your equipment. Wind is constant side onshore 20 to 25 knots every day from December to May, definitely from 10am to 6pm and sometimes 24 hours a day! The variety of water conditions serve kiters of all levels and with all sorts of boards for waves, Big Air, freestyle or foiling.
WHEN IS BEST TO GO?
We have perfect conditions every single day from December to April. January, February and March are ideal for a great kite experience here. The GKA championship is at the beginning of March.
NO WIND?
If there is no wind you can finally rest! If you’re lucky to see a rare no-wind day or if you just get tired of kiting all day, every day, you can visit the old town of Cartagena, 45 minutes away, one of the most enchanting attractions in Colombia. Drift through the colorful streets and admire the colonial architecture, before diving into the expansive gastronomic scene. You can enjoy sailing between tropical islands, or scuba diving and snorkeling. You can rent a bike and there are spots to surf and SUP, there is a gym, yoga, pilates and dance classes in town, and DJ sets at the beach club. Our beautiful local community is nice company to hang out with. If you are planning on working remotely you can rely on the internet in our Kōkōhau Bungalows.
