THE LOWDOWN
“The most beautiful land that human eyes have seen”.
This famous quote from Christopher Columbus when he discovered the island of Hispaniola in 1492 sums it up quite nicely. Today Cabarete is a kitesurfer paradise with 300 days of wind per year. Our new center is located directly on the spot, at the Hotel Villa Taina beach and offers an endless playground for watersports.
Kiting Set Up
The variety of the spot is truly unique. Flat and choppy water, on one hand, swell, and shore break on the other. The beach is safe, with no rocks and a launching and landing space next to the center. Cabarete is the ideal location for kitesurfers because the spot has so much to offer. The wind is modest in the morning and gains strength at midday under the influence of the trade wind. Beginners and intermediates can practice in front of the center, while more experienced kitesurfers can conquer the waves on the reef, located 600m from the shore.
When is best to go?
The Cabarete season is from December to August. The best wind conditions are in June, July and August. The offshore reef is about 600 meters off the beach, and the flat water stretching in between is all slalom lovers could wish for. From May to October, the wind mainly blows side shore from the right at 12-20 knots. From November to April, it mainly blows side-offshore from the right and is less constant, but instead, wave lovers can ride down waves up to 4 meters high. The conditions are perfect for intermediate wave riders and wave freaks!
No wind?
There is a lot to do in Cabarete if there is no wind. First, you can also go to the most famous surf beach Playa El Encuentro or go, either by hiking or cable car, to Mount Isabella, a mountain with a spectacular view of the city, beaches and vegetation. You can do horse riding at Tommy’s Ranch and discover all the beautiful countryside of Cabarete. Finally, you can enjoy your fruit cocktail at happy hour and allow yourself to be carried away by the rhythms of Merengue and Bachata.
