For those in search of a user-friendly freeride kite, check out the latest RRD Passion Y30, the newest version of a model that has been a staple in RRD’s lineup for well over a decade. This kite has consistently been the choice for riders seeking an excellent freeride experience with ease of use.
The Y30 features a delta shape with a low to medium aspect ratio and three struts. It’s constructed with high-quality Dacron, ensuring an ultra-rigid frame and uses the renowned Teijin Techno Force™ Double Ripstop for the canopy. This 2×2 yarn canopy strikes a perfect balance between strength, rigidity and weight. Overall, the Y30 is exceptionally well-built, with strategic reinforcements that ensure durability while keeping the weight within the normal range.
Upon launching the kite, we immediately noticed its reactivity and sensitivity. It’s important to mention that for this test, we used the RRD Global Bar, equipped with their unique rigid thread lines. These lines enhance the kite’s behavior and steering compared to standard lines. They provide a direct connection between the bar and the kite, reducing lag and giving you the confidence to fly the kite without constantly watching it, as you can feel its position intuitively. Plus, these lines don’t stretch.
One of the Y30 Passion's most impressive features is its exceptional low-end performance. This kite is incredibly powerful, keeping you riding even in the lightest breezes. The bar pressure is light but offers direct feedback and the kite is both fast and responsive. Its positioning in the wind window makes going upwind quite easy. We were also amazed by its water relaunch capabilities as it relaunches effortlessly and quickly even from awkward positions.
Given these capabilities, the Passion is an excellent choice for kite schools and new riders fresh out of lessons looking for their first gear. But what about other styles or more experienced users? This kite is fantastic for freeriders seeking an easy-to-use kite. If you master the timing and pop, the kite’s lift and hangtime are quite good, making it easy to learn and progress in your jumps. The only downside? Its depower. While good, it felt a bit limited for us in certain situations, but then it’s time to go in and change down to your smaller kite…
The Y30 Passion is an outstanding kite for riders seeking their first kite after lessons, offering easy upwind performance, great low-end and excellent water relaunch. With good lift and hangtime, this kite will also delight intermediate riders seeking a simple kite that will bring joy in every session regardless of conditions. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced freerider, the Y30 Passion promises to deliver an easy kiting experience.
