Brunotti Nova - Brunotti Nova

Brunotti recently launched the Nova, a high-end freeride board that sits at the top of their range. Designed for performance and versatility, the Nova promises to deliver an exceptional riding experience across a variety of conditions and we were looking forward to putting it into test.

The Nova is built with a CNC carbon-compression wood core, which ensures a lightweight yet stiff construction. The inserts are integrated into what Brunotti calls the “Active Backbone”, a structural feature that runs along the board to enhance stiffness and strength. This design distributes insert forces evenly across the board, improving control and comfort. Additionally, the board features double channels and a concave bottom, which optimize performance and stability.

Before hitting the water, we prepared the board, starting with the fins. In the past, Brunotti’s fins we’ve experienced felt plasticky and lacked a premium feel, but the current G10 fins are a significant upgrade, durable, high-quality and give a much more refined feel. Next, we installed the Gravity Pro footstraps, Brunotti’s top-of-the-line model. These straps offer multiple adjustment options, allowing for a fully customizable fit. It took some time to dial in the perfect setup, but the effort was worth it. Once fully assembled, the Nova felt lightweight, setting high expectations for its on-water performance.

Our first session took place in classic Tarifa Levante conditions, choppy and challenging, but this was the perfect opportunity to test the Nova in less-than-ideal conditions. Right from the start, the board impressed with its comfortable ride. The Gravity Pro footstraps are soft and supportive, and the board’s balanced flex and lightweight construction make it easy to handle, even in rough water. The Nova cuts through chop effortlessly, with minimal spray, offering a smooth and stable experience.

As a freeride board, it doesn’t have an aggressive grip, which actually allows for playful turns and carves, making it a fun and lively ride. It also rides upwind with ease, and overall, the board’s performance can be summed up in few words: easy, comfortable and fun.

Over the following weeks, we tested the Nova in a variety of conditions and disciplines. It truly shines in flat and choppy water, where its design feels most at home. The only scenario where it struggled was in stormy wave conditions where its rocker profile can cause the tips to catch on waves, which might require some adjustment for riders used to boards with more rocker. That said, with a bit of practice, this could easily be overcome.

When it comes to popping, the Nova’s double concave and channels make loading and releasing energy effortless. Landings are smooth and stable, thanks to the board’s flex and grip, ensuring confidence even during high jumps.

The Brunotti Nova delivers exactly what it promises: a versatile freeride board that caters to a wide range of riders and conditions. Whether you’re a seasoned freerider or someone looking to progress, even from zero, the Nova’s blend of comfort, performance and playfulness makes it a standout choice.
