TKM61 SLAYING GIANTS - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #61

Slaying Giants

“The conditions at Nazaré hadn’t really worked out in recent years – it takes a few weather constellations for everything to go well for kitesurfing there. But finally, on the 28th of January the biggest and best day for kiting Nazaré in years lined up and showed some massive waves with perfect cross/cross offshore wind…”

James Carew has been throwing himself into the giant waves of Nazaré, not only with a kite, but also without one by tow-in surfing. He recently kited the biggest wave of his life there…

TKM61 MINT - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #61

Mint!

“Sumbawa itself is dry and hot, with palm trees scattered sparingly across the horizon. Waves wait around every corner, each with its own personality, but Lakey Pipe was the centerpiece of our adventure. A hollow, thick slab breaking directly onto jagged reef – it was both terrifying and mesmerizing, a true test of skill and nerve…”

Oswald Smith and Willow-River Tonkin sent us some absolutely stunning photos of their trip to one of Indonesia’s best left-hand barrels, and Ozzie even bagged himself the cover in the process.

TKM61 BAYWATCH - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #61

Baywatch

“As short lines has grown in popularity over the last few years, the idea of running an event has been mentioned more and more in the kite community. Short lines has broken free of its tiny niche which has been a very small, often disconnected group of individuals. A lot more is possible now, thus putting short-line Big Air competition in people’s minds.”

With short-line kiting taking off in popularity, the first short-line comp has now been held, which Stijn Mul and Camdyn Kellett tell us all about. It was not without incident however…

TKM61 Legends in Sync - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #61

Legends in Sync

“I had in mind to do something different and unique, and I thought about doing a synchronized kiteloop. When I got a call from Harlem for a shoot and they told me that Lorenzo and Aaron were the riders, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to make it happen. It is impossible to have a better duo, considering all the history behind their careers…”

Aaron Hadlow and Lorenzo Casati, with Samuel Cárdenas behind the lens, set themselves the task of catching the first synchronized kiteloop on film. It was all about perfect timing…

TKM61 MISSION Flying Downwind - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #61

The Mission: Flying Downwind

“Our journey began at the legendary Cauipe Lagoon, a playground for world-class kiters. From there, we launched into open water, the natural habitat of Flysurfer’s new Supersonic kite. Perfect conditions awaited us as the kite soared for the first time along the coastline towards Baleia”

Endless sandy beaches, super reliable wind, and postcard-perfect landscapes… Flysurfer’s photoshoot mission was to conquer 450 kilometers of Brazil’s northeast coastline.

TKM61 DAKHLA DOWNWIND CHALLENGE - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #61

Dakhla Downwind Challenge

“The trip began with chaos… At the airport my dad realized his passport was still in his van, parked with the valet service. Chasing the van down, making some frantic calls and a few small payments, we were finally checked in. Delays, missed connections, and a night in a Casablanca hotel were followed by a frazzled arrival in Dakhla late at night the next day…”

After initial hiccups, Tom Court set off on a grueling mission: an epic 500km downwinder along the deserted Saharan coastline, with his 66-year-old father joining him for the ride.

Insight

“Something way more serious happened. An unconscious kiter was pulled out of the water and there was a high chance that his lungs were full of seawater. No one else knew what to do, but Jett did. Without a second of doubt, he started performing CPR. After 28 chest compressions, the kiter started coughing up water and regained consciousness…”

When a near death occurs while kiting it’s a bit of a wake up call for the kite community. Jett Bradshaw and Ruben Lenten reflect on why first aid is so important and what they’re doing about it.
