“A couple of months later, the same friends that got me into wakeboarding started kiting, so of course I did too. It seemed inevitable that I would get into twintip freestyle because of my wakeboard background. But actually the sport that I really love and is a lifestyle for me is surfing, so I went into the wave-riding side of kiting because of that.”
Kite-Surf World Champion Gabriel Benetton explains how he got to the top of his game following a winning streak in wakeboarding, and tells us about his trip to the green room in Indonesia.
“A week initially seems like plenty of time to make a short video, but in reality, no matter how great the conditions might be or how stacked teams might appear, this event challenges the stamina and endurance of the world’s best. We hear from the Kite Park League about their recent Team Battle event, where teams go up against each other to see who will produce the goods – best video – after an intense week’s filming.

“I was back for my second year at the Sertões event. Last year I was blown away by the event but also did not know entirely what to expect… The final 90 minutes were some of the toughest of my life, and this year I vowed not to put myself in a similar position… This year I was better prepared and knew exactly what to expect. And I wanted to do better.”

When there’s a big birthday to celebrate, and you want to try and bag yourself a cover with your new wave kite, what better destination than the legendary One Eye in Mauritius.
“It was an awesome trip to Egypt, but I didn’t escape a minor mishap… I had a bad crash onto a coral reef – an occupational hazard of picking such an epic spot. I looked down and saw this massive gash in my shin. Clearly, stitches were needed, but the logistics were a nightmare. A speedboat to the hospital and back? Not happening…”
What do you do when you injure yourself in the middle of nowhere? Luckily there was a doctor in the house and some gin to take the edge off, so it didn’t spoil an otherwise epic trip.
“For the past year, the three have traveled the globe in an effort to bring their vision to life and showcase kiteboarding as they see it through a full-length film, Vortex. Tom, Xander and Noè set out to create a film that not only showcases some of the best riding but also the truth of the modern era in which we all live and connect.”
Vortex, a film by Tom, Xander and Noè, premiers in Cape Town in January, promising to be more than just the average short video that dominates our viewing space these days.
