What is inside this issue?

TKM59 feature Storm has passed - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #59

Storm has passed

“I had a setback last year with a meniscus injury. It happened while kiting, but not even during a landing or takeoff – I wanted to turn in a wave and it snapped on my straightened leg. My knee buckled and I had to ride back 300 meters, which was very painful. It was a blow to end a good year like that. But it gave me motivation to come back and do more.”

While Cohan van Dijk recovered from a knee injury he took time out to philosophize about life as a pro kiter and the importance of not putting too much pressure on yourself in competition.

TKM59 feature Whiteleys - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #59

The Whiteleys

He was doing all his freestyle tricks on the foil and loved wave riding on his foil too. His endless enthusiasm to maximize every chance of wind and constantly push himself on the water to progress is something I’ve always aspired to. He gave enthusiasm and positivity to everyone around. The beach was always such a brighter place with him there.”

Hannah Whiteley pays tribute to her dad, Peter, one of the most inspirational kiters on the planet and 5x British Senior Champion, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

The Other Side

“I have always preferred the winter season in Cape Town for kiting rather than the summer season. Don’t get me wrong, the summer season is world class with a bunch of spots to kite. It’s just that it gets really busy and, apart from the nuclear wind from time to time, I get the feeling that it misses that gnarly feeling that comes with kiting the unknown.”

Jason van der Spuy shows us the other side of Cape Town – what its winter storms can bring. Buckle in and get ready for an adrenaline-fueled ride away from the usual Blouberg…

TKM59 Fair Isles - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #59

These Fair Isles

It set me to wonder what conditions, beaches, breaks and Big Air spots existed right on our doorsteps here in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland – the lesser explored shores. Fueling that curiosity, the #freeridekingdoms project began. My aim: to explore the British Isles to find the best spots for freeriding and discover more of this un-shredded land.”

Tom Court has made it his mission to explore more of what is on his own doorstep and headed to Scotland and Ireland to open up possibilities for shred that don’t rely on international travel.

Changing Tack

“The young kids have taken Big Air to another level. Every day there seems to be new action and new tricks. I can’t imagine how the level will evolve in the coming years. Since the level in Big Air is so high at the moment, I’m not quite ready to join the World Cup again but I know the potential in me and without any doubt I can find it together with my new gear.”

Accomplished rider Posito Martínez decided to stop competing earlier this year, but recent trips to Turkey and Egypt – plus his new gear – are making him reconsider his decision.

TKM59 Mission Masirah - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #59

The Mission: Masirah

“Masirah is a relatively small island with very few tourists, but an absolutely beautiful place with wind almost every single day – just like Brazil in that aspect, but nowhere near as crowded with kiters and tourists. It’s more raw and untouched than any place we visit all year and that’s why we keep coming back.”

Giel Vlugt and Zara Hoogenraad missioned to Masirah Island, off the east coast of Oman. Giel tells us why it’s one of their favorite places to visit, this being their third time back.

TKM59 Mission Indo Perfection - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #59

The Mission: Indo Perfection

“In 2022, I went on a surf trip to the Mentawai Islands, a true surfer’s paradise. Kitesurfing conditions however were rare, with only a few days offering enough wind to get out on the water. Despite this, I saw the potential. So this year I booked another trip back to Indonesia, determined to find that perfect kite session I missed the first time around.”

When Sebastian Ribeiro headed to Indonesia on a trip with surf friends, he couldn’t resist packing his kite gear and searching out the perfect spot for some wind-powered shredding.

TKM59 Tangled Lines - THEKITEMAG ISSUE #59

Tangled Lines: Tom Bridge

“This recent Virgin project was pretty mental, having years of planning and hundreds of thousands of pounds being spent, and it all coming down to one hour on a random morning in June was quite intense. Especially when you are trying to jump off the top deck of a cruise ship full of paying passengers… It was bloody brilliant once it was over…”

When Tom Bridge sent us evidence of him jumping off a ship… well we just had to find out more. We also thought we’d get his fellow riders to throw some Tangled Lines questions at him.
