Let’s look at the regular Dacron version first – how has its performance evolved from the previous version?

Our Religion kite is renowned for its legendary drift, quick turns and refined handling. With the new Y30 edition, we have further enhanced all of these essential wave kite qualities. The Religion now also sits deeper in the wind window, resulting in an even better low end performance. Furthermore we’ve significantly increased its depower capabilities, fully eliminating harness pressure during critical maneuvers like bottom turns, while keeping the kite super reactive and agile at any time.

And are there any significant construction changes?

Yes! The pulleys have been removed from the bridle system for incredibly direct steering and smooth power delivery. 160 and 140 g/sqm Rectex Dacron are now combined for a durable and stiff, yet lightweight and remarkably agile airframe. We have opted to continue to use high-end D2 ripstop as the main material for our canopy, but have completely changed the sewing pattern for a much more efficient load frame layout. For further weight and performance improvements the trailing edge is now reinforced with fiberglass battens and a stripe of double layer D2 ripstop fabric.

Then with the new Gold version, is the airframe different to the regular version? Did you have to adapt the bridles?

The Gold Religion also incorporates two different weights of airframe fabric, but in this version, 85% of the leading edge is crafted from Aluula, creating a much stronger and stiffer yet lightweight central structure. The remaining portion of the leading edge, along with the struts, is made from 140 gsm Rectex Dacron, providing just the right amount of flex at the tips. This combination results in a kite that is not only lighter but also incredibly responsive and fast turning. Additionally, the bridle system has been upgraded to 1.2mm Dyneema lines, in order to effectively transmit the forces of the stronger central airframe while reducing air-drag for improved performance.

What are the performance advantages of the Gold Religion compared to the regular version? Who should buy which version?

The Gold Religion boosts an 8% overall weight reduction for impressive low-end performance and a world-class drift ability. The stiffer Aluula central frame along with stronger Dyneema bridles make an exceptionally reactive and agile kite with superb handling and super-quick pivoting turns. The Gold Religion is the pinnacle of wave kite design – whoever expects the absolute best from their equipment will be thrilled by the new Gold Religion. The majority of new features are also available with the new “standard” Religion, for top wave kite performance at an even greater price-point.

How difficult was it incorporating Aluula into the new kite?

Drawing from our extensive experience incorporating Aluula into our wing range, especially the EVO Wing Gold, we had the expertise needed to integrate this advanced material into our new Religion kite. Nevertheless it was a meticulous process, requiring careful attention to every detail to fully maximize the kite’s potential. The result is an innovative airframe design that seamlessly blends Aluula with Rectex Dacron, harnessing the unique strengths of both fabrics to deliver unparalleled performance.

Who was involved in developing and testing the new Religions?

Our legendary kite designer Werther Castelletti is responsible for the development of the new Religions; all changes to the kites’ shape, construction and bridle system stem from his vision of creating the ultimate wave kite. Abel Lago is our wave rider that was most involved in the testing process of this latest Religion generation, providing crucial feedback and input to Werther during elaborative testing missions in Tenerife, Galicia and South Africa.

You told us you have a new Gold Obsession coming out in a few months. Can you give our readers any teasers to get them excited?!

As we are working on the final production details, the Gold Obsession is already now the ultimate weapon of our RRD Big Air team. Our new Gold Obsession will be 20% lighter than the previous “Big Air Obsession”, featuring a great amount of Aluula for improved performance in both low- and high-end situations. Through its explosive lift, massive hang time and impressive second lift it will give Big Air riders of all levels the ability to quite literally reach new heights. ■
