The Wind and the Wild

After watching Leo Verrecchia’s video “The Wind & The Wild”, we caught up with him to find out more about his recent trips to Brazil and the US. He was stoked to report the 2023/24 season was his best kite season to date – he experienced significant progression in his riding, explored new places, made new friends, and had unforgettable experiences. And when he eventually returned home he topped it off by winning the Australian Freestyle Nationals…

My overseas travels began last summer in August when I decided to immerse myself in the kite park scene. I packed my bags and headed to the kiteboarding and wind sports mecca of North America: Hood River, Oregon. I’d heard great things about Hood River from fellow kiters and I knew it would be an excellent opportunity to ride in the kite park, compete and connect with the Naish family, see their operations, and participate in video shoots. Upon arrival, I was pleasantly surprised by the welcoming and friendly community. They were eager to share the ins and outs of the kite spots, local attractions and activities. Hood River truly lives up to its reputation; despite its small size, the town is vibrant and is the perfect destination for wingers, foilers, windsurfers and kiters alike.

During my stay, I competed in the Kite Park League Team Battle, where five teams worked to produce their own video segments. This event was a brilliant idea, promoting team building and allowing us to express our creative side through unique film edits. I quickly found my place in the kite park community and had a fantastic time participating in this event. Besides kiting, Hood River offered a variety of activities. I visited numerous waterfalls and creeks, skated at Hood River Skatepark, went mountain biking and camping, swung from the bridge rope swing at Lyle, enjoyed the local cafes and bars and, of course, kited in the kite park.

After a solid month and a half in Oregon, I was ready to take a break from park and freestyle kiting and focus on the other disciplines that make the sport so diverse. What better place to do this than the beautiful islands of Hawaii? I’d always dreamed of going to Hawaii, and now was the perfect time. Being a team rider for Naish, it just made sense to visit Maui, the birthplace and home to some of the most iconic kite brands. I spent two incredible weeks in Maui, where I toured the Naish headquarters, witnessed new gear development, kited at Naish Beach, and participated in the 2024 Triad product shoot. Meeting the legend himself, Robby Naish, was a highlight!

Feeling refreshed, I was eager to push my progression again, so I packed my things again and headed for Brazil. Brazil holds a special place in my heart as it was the first overseas country I flew to back in 2021. It marked the beginning of my international kiting journey, where I met many faces in the community and built my reputation in the freestyle scene. Brazil is a dream destination for kiters due to its consistent conditions and laid-back lifestyle. It has become a tradition for me to return every year to progress my riding, reconnect with friends, and make a

freestyle video. While there I participated in two world titles. The first was the Kite Park League Superfinal in Taiba. After months of familiarizing myself with the kite park discipline, I was ready for a proper competition. It was cool seeing the whole crew help build the features and set up the event. Despite the light wind during the competition, the event was a huge success and memorable experience. Overall, I was happy with my performance, surprising myself by making it to the finals!

Just a few weeks later, I got to compete in the GKA Freestyle-Kite World Cup stop in Cauipe lagoon. This was the event I had looked forward to all year. In the days leading up to the event, the wind was quite light; however, when the competition began, Mother Nature delivered us with awesome conditions. Starting from the qualifiers, I made my way through each heat, securing second place in most. I was thrilled to reach the quarterfinals! Although I couldn’t put together my ideal heat due to a few too many crashes, I was proud of my performance and got to enjoy watching the remaining competitors fight it out for the top spot. After that, with a month left in Brazil, I had plenty of time to improve my riding and capture video footage. By the end of the trip, my freestyle skills had significantly advanced, and I had SD cards full of new tricks to share.

After almost six months overseas, it was time to return to Australia to conclude an amazing year of travel. With a full season of kiting under my belt, I was more than ready to compete in the Australian Freestyle Nationals. Despite the wind dropping for the finals, I managed to land a clean Crail Tootsie, Slim 7 and my first-ever Backmobe 5 in competition, securing the title of Australian Freestyle Champion for 2024! To cap it all off, my brother and I embarked on a final journey in my van across the country to Western Australia. The west coast offered epic kite spots, from catching waves in Geraldton to handlepasses in Safety Bay and kiteloops in Augusta. Having my mobile home was great as it allowed us to explore the entire coastline and hunt out ideal training grounds for freestyle and Big Air.

Before heading to Hood River, I’d had the idea to document my entire season of travel on video, aiming to create a proper kiting movie when I returned home. In April, I debuted my first full-length kiteboarding edit, “The Wind & the Wild”, which follows my travels and adventures. This past season, I grew immensely as a rider and developed a deeper appreciation for kiteboarding. The tightly-knit community and incredible locations around the world are something every kiter should be grateful for! My passion for the sport continues to grow, and I look forward to sharing more travel stories in the coming years…
