The Mission: Chasing Sunrays

Kari Schibevaag and friends Catrine, Lone and Guro embarked on a journey south to swap the freezing temperatures of Norway’s winter for the welcoming warmth of Egypt. The land of ancient wonders and crystal-clear water dished up a kiting and yachting adventure in the sun that was just what they needed. And, spoiler alert, they even got to swim with dolphins.

Norway hit a lot of cold weather records this winter so a break away was very much welcomed. The anticipation was palpable as we gathered our bags, our destination beckoning with the promise of sun-soaked days and balmy nights. Our winter coats and scarves were exchanged for swimsuits and the lightest of beachwear. As we boarded the plane, I could almost feel the chill dissipating, leaving behind a winter wonderland draped in frost and trading it for the vibrant colors of the Egyptian landscape. A week onboard a yacht and crystal-clear water awaited. Our goal was simple – to soak up every bit of warmth that Egypt has to offer, to enjoy some kiting, SUPing and wingfoiling, and to try and find and hopefully swim with dolphins.

However, our journey took an unexpected twist as the baggage carousel played a cruel trick, leaving our checked bags nowhere in sight. After a prolonged wait, we were told the elusive bags would rendezvous with us at the boat in Hamata Port when located. A four-hour taxi ride later, we arrived at the dream destination. Hamata Port greeted us with open arms, and turquoise waters beckoned as we sailed to an island just beyond the port. The crystal-clear waters proved to be a snorkeler’s haven, the underwater world vibrant and teeming with marine life. As the day unfolded, we basked in the warmth of the Egyptian sun, perched on the deck with smiles stretching from ear to ear. The allure of the boat, the camaraderie, and the promise of a week filled with discovery and relaxation set the tone for an unforgettable journey. With the sun dipping into the horizon, casting hues of orange and pink across the vast expanse of the Red Sea, we knew this seafaring escapade was destined to be a week of pure bliss.

The next morning, we woke on the boat to a magical sunrise, with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the air. With the expectation of our bags arriving on the boat later in the day, we decided to take it easy. Life at sea is beautiful and with a hectic schedule just before the trip we were able to just step down and relax, before the bags arrived and the action could begin. Sailing towards where dolphins would most likely be found, we marveled at the vastness of the ocean. The crew’s promise of a dolphin encounter had us eagerly awaiting the spectacle, and as it turned out we not only found the dolphins, but at the same time, our bags arrived, so it was a double win. Eager to immerse ourselves in this extraordinary experience, we plunged into the sea for a swim with the dolphins. Hours drifted by, filled with joy and wonder as we connected with these magnificent creatures.

Emerging from the sea hungry, we found the chef had prepared a delicious meal. Seated on the deck, we enjoyed our lunch while observing the playful dolphins in the distance. Truly perfect. The next day we headed to an island that would be good to kite from, much easier than trying to launch a kite from the boat. Thankfully, the wind was on our side on this trip and over the next few days I had many good sessions both on the kite and wing. I could leave my wing inflated tied up to the boat when I went for a kite session from the island. The spot was perfect, with a beautiful sandy beach with side offshore wind so the water was really flat – a kite paradise for everyone. We had the SUP and a smaller rescue boat in case anything went wrong, and the crew on the boat were really good people that helped us when needed. I would highly recommend this kind of kite holiday to anyone, whether you are still learning to go upwind or wanting to perfect your unhooked moves.

Evenings on the boat were a celebration of good food and great company. The chef continued to delight our taste buds with culinary creations that mirrored the richness of the sea around us. As we gathered on the deck under the canvas of stars, or round a bonfire on the island, the sounds of laughter and contentment echoed over the gentle lapping of the waves. The simplicity of life on the boat, immersed in nature, brought a sense of tranquility.  As our magical journey of sailing, dolphins, wind, water sports, good food, laughter and wonderful company came to an end, we knew we would go home with memories to cherish of a special place.
