THE COMMITTED: Karina Oliani

Brazil’s north-eastern coastline is famous amongst kiters for its epic multi-day downwinders, and if you’ve never done one you should definitely put it on your bucket list. But how about doing one with a difference? Join medical professionals and non-medical volunteers, and discover the thrill of a ‘medical’ downwinder, a journey of adventure and compassion, organized by Karina Oliani, one of the most committed kiters we’ve had the pleasure to meet.

THEKITEMAG ISSUE #58

When I decided to become a doctor, I wasn’t quite sure I would be happy as one. Mainly because doctors spend most of their time indoors, and I am a very outdoorsy person. I could never settle for being inside for so long. So, I decided to study Wilderness Medicine and became the first South American doctor to earn a Fellowship in Expedition Medicine. This led me to start the Dharma Institute, an NGO dedicated to bringing specialized medical care to the most remote and inhospitable regions of Brazil and the world.

Today, I’m inviting you to join a truly remarkable expedition that transforms lives and profoundly impacts coastal communities. Let me share how we’ve inspired many kitesurfing doctors to drive social change in underserved communities. In 2019, as the medical coordinator, I initiated the first medical downwinder organized by the Dharma Institute, where I currently serve as Vice-President, voluntarily. We embarked on an extraordinary journey covering 380km along the coastline over ten days, culminating at Barra Grande Beach in Piauí. Documenting this journey resulted in a captivating documentary that I directed and produced, showcasing our integration of medical care, environmental education, and donations of essential supplies to impoverished families in remote villages of Ceará, as featured on Canal OFF and Globo.

Since then, we’ve successfully organized five more editions of the Compassionate Downwind. November this year will mark a significant milestone as we conduct our first medical downwinder along the Costa Branca, Rio Grande do Norte, renowned as one of Brazil’s most beautiful coastal regions. Our adventure will begin in Parrachos, Rio do Fogo, often dubbed the Caribbean of Brazil, where turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs lie just kilometers from the shore. Our expedition will be guided by world champion Kauli Seadi, a revered figure in kitesurfing, windsurfing and foil boarding, a true waterman who balances his time between managing several renowned properties and Hawaii. Together with Kauli, I am meticulously planning the logistics of an expedition entirely at the mercy of the wind and ocean’s unpredictability.

This year, we will serve eight communities: São Miguel do Gostoso, Enxu Queimado, Praia do Marco, São Bento, Galo, Galinhos, Barreiras, and Diogo Lopes. We provide healthcare across communities varying in population density, ensuring access to quality medical care – from general and pediatric medicine to specialized fields – tailored to each locality’s needs. In addition to medical specialties, all team members contribute as general physicians, attending to adults and children, while supporting logistical and sustainable initiatives in the community. Our aim extends beyond sport to aiding the communities we traverse. Comprising medical professionals and volunteers, our mission is to provide basic healthcare to isolated communities often lacking access to medical services. In essence, we merge our passion for sport, adventure and travel with altruism.

Team ‘Water’, comprising skilled kiters, will undertake the sea route, while team ‘Land’ (non-kiters and technical support) will follow a parallel route on land and sometimes boat to meet for medical assistance the day following each sailing leg. Led by Luis Octavio, my angel on the water, and supported by experienced riders and volunteers, we are reminded that downwinders can be dangerous, and many accidents can occur. The team on the water undertaking the downwinder will need to have excellent physical fitness and be intermediate to advanced kiters, and will cover approximately 200km of coastline. The environment is challenging: extended periods at sea, intense sun and heat during community service days along the coast. We seek qualified medical and non-medical professionals willing to contribute to our cause. The expedition is open to physicians (proficiency in Portuguese, Spanish, or English required), as well as non-medical volunteers interested in organizational roles, triage, pharmacy, helping beginners in the water and general services. The most crucial requirement is a desire to work together, make a difference, and create a lasting impact.

So, join us on an extraordinary journey along the Costa Branca, where breathtaking landscapes and warm hospitality await adventurous souls. This is not just a kitesurfing expedition, it’s an immersive experience that combines the thrill of the sport with the profound impact of humanitarian work. By joining us, you will not only experience some of the best kite spots in the world but also contribute to a cause that changes lives. Embrace the adventure, experience the beauty, and make a difference.
