Decide, commit, succeed!

Nathalie Lambrecht has consistently appeared on the podium over the last couple of years, both in Big Air and freestyle competitions. She came into the recent Lords of Tram event as the favorite and achieved the biggest score of the women’s contest. But a missed trick in her first heat saw her battling for survival in round two. How would she keep the focus needed to fight her way through the gusty conditions to the final and a podium place…?

Have you ever wondered what goes on in the minds of participants at competitions? Describing all the emotions and thoughts I experienced before, during and after the Lords of Tram GKA Big Air Kite World Cup is hard. However, I will try describing a fraction of the million thoughts and feelings racing through me.

Competition mornings? They come with butterflies in your belly, a synonym for a nervous stomach (I like how it sounds with butterflies). It shows that I am doing something that means a lot to me, which is the beauty of all this – I am doing something I genuinely care about. I remind myself to take deep breaths – breathe in for four seconds, hold for four seconds and breathe out for four seconds. I have spent months getting my act together, only for it to come down to one day; telling myself to trust my preparation keeps me calm. There is, for sure, excitement to performing when it counts. This has been my biggest challenge over the years, especially in Freestyle – somehow, in Big Air, it has worked better to get podiums, but the gold is yet to come. I can do dream heats in training, but it is a different story as soon as that flag goes up. You tell yourself, “Just another day, just another session”, “You have one of the best spots in the world to yourself”, trying to shake off the jitters. But who are we kidding? There is still the other side of the coin – thinking about every eyeball on the beach and the sponsors you want to live up to. And those expectations I set for myself? Sky-high.

I have visualized myself on top of that podium countless times, especially thanking those people who helped me get there… It takes a team to be chasing the top. And there is a bigger picture – other than wanting to be World Champion – which I remind myself of when my judgement is clouded with a million different things. Call it the ripple effect – when one of us breaks a barrier, it is like we all level up. It is about sending that message. If I can do this, you can too. To see women in the sport push their limits to land something no other woman has done is inspirational. When you see the impossible made possible, that is where real fire stems from.

If I am honest, not landing a third essential trick in that first heat in round one knocked away a lot of my confidence, especially knowing I could do much better. Getting sent to the elimination round made my visualized podium get very blurry, and doubt and fear were spread across my entire body. On top of that, the elimination round included one of my biggest idols, Angely Bouillot, and my closest friend on tour, Zara Hoogenraad; both are top performers and lead the way for the women of Big Air. It felt like a final; I like to focus on my own game rather than on who I am against, but I knew in this heat I had to play smart and give it every ounce I had. Without the mental support from my sister, I am not sure if I would have come with the same fire. Right before my heat, she gave me a kiss on my cheek and said, “Våga lyckas”, which means dare to succeed, a quote from my mental coach that I told her really lights something in me. When I felt the power in my 8m Orbit Pro, I found my flow state, and had one of the best Big Air heats of my life. My favorite part was landing a big kiteloop board-off. Then, I rode a good semi and made it to the final.

I wish I had as strong wind in the final as in round two and the semis, but then again, I also should have waited more for the gusts, especially in my last attempt, as that was gonna decide if I stayed in second or put up a big score to get in first. It was an emotional rollercoaster day, to say the least. To be honest, Pippa van Iersel’s win is one of those epic sports comebacks you tell your grandkids about – after two years of being injured, taking it home is one for the history books, and she truly deserved it.

So what is next? I am looking forward to future battles for that top spot and, meanwhile, to keep progressing in this amazing sport. Now, all my focus and training is on Gran Canaria, the second stop of the Big Air World Tour. Big Air is like living in a paradox. My heart beats outside my chest, yet I must stay calm. Water splashes everywhere, yet I have to stay focused. The wind is roaring and gusting, yet I must be in control…
